The Main Point, Hebrews 8:1-2

Do you like it when a person gets straight to the point?

Are you glad when the long-winded preacher finally gets to the point?

Then, you’ll be happy to hear, that after twelve weeks we’ve finally made it to Hebrews 8 which starts with the words, “Now this is the main point...”

Now this is the main point of the things we are saying: We have such a High Priest, who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens

Now this is the main point... I’ve said all that, all eight chapters, all twelve weeks saying Jesus is far better, than any offer you’ll ever get.

Therefore, we must give the more earnest heed lest we drift away, harden our heart, depart from the living God. Lest we find ourselves unable to ever enter His Eternal Rest, after the awesome order of Marvelous Melchizedek.

Friends, every other bridge is burned. Turning to religion or anything else, is rejecting the relationship Jesus offers.

Jesus has briefly stopped the clock, for His Bride. It’s as if He is on bended knee holding out the ring of Salvation, asking if you’ll be His Bride.

But the offer only stands for the brief moment called, Today. He says, “Today, if you hear His Voice, harden not your heart.” (Heb. 3-4).

Now this is the main point: We have such a High Priest...

Notice these words are not simply stating a cold distant formal professional matter of fact, but a warm close, familiar personal matter of possession.

It does not say there is such a High Priest. It says we have...The word for “have” by definition, is to hold or possess.

Saying, I know there is a doctor, there is a lawyer, there is a wife, is a LOT different from saying: I have a doctor. I have a lawyer. I have a wife.

The main point straight out of the gate is pointing to relationship.

Now this is the main point: We have, not just any ol’ High Priest but we have, such a High Priest.

Such a High Priest referring back to the powerfully unique, One-of-a-kind character of Melchizedek, Priest of the Most High God, King of Righteousness, King of Salem. (Gen. 14:18-20, Ps. 110:4, Hebrews 5:6, 10, 6:20, 7:1, 10, 11,15,17).

We have Jesus High Priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.

In this ever changing, flip-flopping, divorcing, bed hopping, world, Jesus extends His nail scarred hand and offers you a forever relationship.

Jesus, your High Priest forever.

The High Priest represented God to man, and man to God. Jesus offers to stand with you, forever, as your Priest offering what you never could. A once and forever acceptable perfect Sacrifice.

Now this is the main point: we have such a High Priest who is seated...

He is seated. He’s not a workaholic, too busy to take time to talk to you. No, He’s seated. He’s stable. He’s steady. He’s ready. He did His part.

He’s already gone to the altar.

Now, He waits, for you.

Now this is the main point: we have such a High Priest who is seated at the right hand...

Friends, He’s not seated up there on a cloud like a couch potato watching As the World Turns. He’s seated at the right hand, that refers to a position of Power, authority and honor.

He is still very much alive and well and involved in the affairs of men.

He is able and willing to solve every single problem you have.

He is as intimately and actively involved in your life as you’ll let Him.

He is not going to do it your way, how you want, when you want.

He is by no means, your genie in a Bible.

Hebrews 12:2. Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Now this is the main point: we have such a High Priest who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens...

Now perhaps to keep us humble, to be sure we’re not elevated above measure, we catch a glimpse of Christ in heaven as King of kings, Lord of lords.

Now we’ve come full circle.

If these words sound familiar it’s because we read them before, and you have a good memory, because it was when we first opened this Book.

When we first opened Hebrews, we read: When He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. Hebrews 1:3b.

Jesus willingly went through the lowest form of death (purged our sins).

Now fittingly He has been raised to the highest form of Life.

a Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle which the Lord erected, and not man.

Now this is the main point: we have such a High Priest who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister...

Please don’t miss this powerful transition.

The Lord only allowed us a momentary glimpse of Him seated on the throne of Majesty, and then, without pause we see Him in True form as our wonderful, marvelous, Servant King.

Minister: leitourgos: Servant, Public Servant.

Mark 10:42-45, “You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. 44 And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Philippians 2:5-11, Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

John 13:3-5, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God, rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself. After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

Our Lord isn’t satisfied to just go and sit on a throne and do nothing. He told us. I’m going, but don’t worry. I’ll be doing stuff for you. Preparing a place for you, in My Dad’s house. It’ll be awesome. When everything is ready, I’ll come back and get you. John 14:1-3.

In the meantime, you tell everybody, they’re invited too.

Now this is the main point: we have such a High Priest who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens, 2 a Minister, and His Name is Jesus!

The Main Point is JESUS.

Peter set his eyes on Jesus and defied gravity, despised the storm, and walked on water. As long as his eyes were on the Main Point, no storm could blow him off course, no wave could knock him over, no depth could pull him under.

You too, can set your heart on Jesus, the Main Point, and rise up in the midst of your storm, and defy the wind and waves.

Let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, we look to You and no other. Calm the storm or let it rage, either way we keep our eyes on You. For You are the Main Point. Our heart’s desire, is You, always.

We love You, forever.

Amen.
