Faith, Hope, Love, Hebrews 10:19-25

19 Therefore,

I said all that, (Christ’s sinless death fulfilled the sacrificial law so, there no longer remains an offering for sin for all who receive Him).

brethren,

Familial word, he could’ve said, family, for all who receive Him are given the right to become children of God (John 1:12).

having boldness

Since we are His children we come boldly, not proudly, but confidently, as family.

to enter the Holiest

To enter, like family, no invitation needed, no need to knock, just walk right in, not stand outside as strangers, but enter all the way, near to the heart of God.

by the blood of Jesus,

What can wash away my sins? Nothin’ but the blood of Jesus...

The blood that gives me strength, from day to day, it will never lose its power

Confident as family but humble as servants knowing access is only granted by the grace of God through the blood of Christ.

For while we were yet sinners, strangers, Christ died for us Romans 5:8.

20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

Not an old and dead way, but a new, living Way. Jesus’ death, offers Life.

The Greek word for “new” is defined as recently killed, or freshly slain, because the blood path Jesus made is eternally efficient. The blood will never loose its power.

What does this new and living way look like practically speaking?

Great question, the next few verses tell us:

1) Draw near in faith.

2) Hold fast our hope.

3) Consider one another in love.

When you draw near to God in faith, hope rises in your soul, and His love for others is born. 1 Corinthians 13:13, And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

21and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

1)    Draw near in faith.

The only way to draw near to God is by faith. (Faith comes by hearing the Word. Romans 10:17).

Hebrews 11:6; But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Did you notice in verses 21-22 the requirements for drawing near to God in faith?

1.    Right Motive

2.    Right Mind

3.    Right Movement

1.    True heart in full assurance of faith. Right Motive. Right heart. We don’t come to God just to bail us out of the mess we’re in, just so we can go back and do it again.

2.    Heart sprinkled from evil conscience. Right Mind. Our conscience is clear, we draw near with a repentant heart, our minds made up to follow God’s Word, no matter how we think or feel about it.

3.    Bodies washed. Right Movement. Right actions. Do what’s right because it’s right. Priests washed before entering the temple. Christians are baptized outwardly to share their inward movement of making Jesus Lord of their life.

Love is a verb. Faith is action. Faith without action/works is dead. James 2.

23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.

2)    Hold fast our hope.

Once you draw near in faith, then, hold fast, without wavering, no turning back.

Heb. 3:6, 14, 4:14, 10:38, makes it clear we must hold fast our hope to the end.

24   And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

3)    Consider one another in love.

Here’s the beautiful part, the abundant zoe Life Jesus wants us to live.

The life of God’s Love.

God is Love.

Love never fails.

Consider others in such a way to stir up (provoke, incite, forceful impact toward) love and good works.

NLT: Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works

Romans 12:9-21. Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another.

11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.

17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord20 Therefore

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him;
If he is thirsty, give him a drink;
For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head.”

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Coals of fire is an idiom to be overly kind to your enemy, give them plenty of coal, not just a stingy little.

25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.

From the early Church to today, the Lord expects His Church to gather. His Ekklesia (people called out to understand, interpret and carry out the Word of God).

To not do so. Well, the word the Holy Spirit chooses to use for “forsaking” is the same word Jesus cried from the cross when He said, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?”

The word by definition means: to forsake, abandon, leave behind, desert.

There’s power in unity. The Holy Spirit came when they were all gathered together in one accord. Acts 2.

What about online folks?

In this day of techno-geeky livestreaming, which God made possible by His laws of atmospheric techno-geekiness, it is a blessing to be able to connect with people all over the world in real time.

Is it okay to do Church online? Are you forsaking the gathering together if you don’t meet in person?

It depends upon what we mentioned earlier. Do you have the right motive, right mind, right movement; actions?

Motive? Is your motive because you’re too lazy to get dressed? Or would you love to gather but you’re homebound, or on the road like my adjuster friends, or detained like my jailbird friends?

Mind? Is your mind set on Church hopping and cherry picking, ear tickling sermons? Or are you hungry for the Word, but there’s no Bible teaching/preaching Church to attend?

Movement? If you have the right motive and mind and the Lord gives you peace that your Church is online, then, participate. Show movement. Make sure you’re so involved that if you miss, you’re missed. (That’s true whether in person, or online). Actively listen. Comment on every sermon. Read prayer requests, comment, pray, communicate. Take it seriously, consider yourself an integral part of the family; because you are.

Also consider: You are a spirit, you have a soul, and you live in a body. The important part, the eternal part, of who you are can be present, more present, than some bodies sitting in pews daydreaming or sleeping.

Paul wrote in, Col. 2:5, 1 Cor. 5:3, Although I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit.

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, we pray our motives, minds, and motions, honor You, so Your faith, hope and love shine through us, all the Way to You.

We love You, forever.

Amen.
