Lame Man Leaping, Acts 3:1-12

The Book of Acts, comes in like a Lion.

Rushing mighty Wind. Tongues of Fire. Holy Spirit Fills. Other tongues proclaim wonderous works of God in every language under heaven. One sermon from a fisherman, and 3,000 souls are saved.

Today, we see a lame man leaping, and thousands more get saved.

It’s easy to get addicted to the excitement. But we won’t do that; because we don’t want to miss the real story, the real Power, behind the scenes, in the quiet time, the off season.

In the book of Acts, and in the acts of our lives, we must remain faithful, in season and out.

2 Tim. 4:2. Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

Acts 3:1
Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

Peter and John are friends, old fishing buddies. Now they’re in ministry together, and are on their way to the temple to pray at the hour of prayer (3:00 p.m.).

The ninth hour; perhaps because that was the hour Jesus cried from the cross, Into Thy hands I commit My Spirit. Or, perhaps they were simply following the Jewish custom of praying the 3rd, the 6th and the 9th hours. (9 a.m.; noon; 3 p.m.).

Notice, they took prayer serious enough to have it hardwired into their schedule.

They are the prototype, for the Church, our example.

Do we take prayer serious enough to pause our day to pray?

Do we have appointments with God set so firm in our schedule that the rest of life must revolve around them?

That’s how it was when we were kids. Twice on Sunday, once on Wednesday, when the Church doors were open, we were there. It was an anchor to tie the rest of our lives to. Thank you, mom and dad.

So, Peter and John are on their way to Church…

2 And a certain man lame from his mother’s womb was carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, to ask alms from those who entered the temple;

From birth he was lame, so, his job was that of a beggar.

Don’t despise the guys with signs on the corner—at least they’re doing something. That’s not an easy job. Don’t assume to know their story.

At least he had a beautiful spot.

This gate was 75’ high, on the east side of the temple, toward the Mount of Olives; where Jesus probably walked through, often. It was brass, but had such artistic excellence, it was considered more beautiful than the gates made of silver and gold.

3 who, seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, asked for alms.

He wasn’t paying them much attention; as a beggar, you don’t, it softens the sting of repeated rejection.

But it’s his job, so he asks them for alms.

4 And fixing his eyes on him, with John, Peter said, “Look at us.”

It’s likely that Peter and John, and Jesus and the rest of the disciples, may have passed this very same beggar multiple times over the past few years.

But this time they see him, afresh, through eyes of faith.

So, they delay their trip to the temple. They pause going to Church, to be the Church, to have Church.

Alexander MacLaren (Scottish Baptist Minister): “Purposed devotion is well delayed, when postponed to lighten misery.”

Never be too busy with ministry to minister.

Peter commanded the man’s attention. Look at us.

This was a peculiar request; most would simply drop a coin in his cup without so much as a word or a glance.

But you cannot receive anything from God with lukewarm, apathy. So, the Lord uses Peter’s words like a splash of cold water.

Wake up! Look at us.

5 So he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them.

It worked, he perked up, slapped from his dreary slumber of hopelessness.

Expectancy is the right attitude for receiving.

He was paying attention, expecting something.

Only, what he expected was alms, money, silver, gold.

6 Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you:

Peter boldly proclaims, what most are afraid to admit. I’ve got no money.

Have you heard the story about the pope and the monk?

After showing all the treasures of the church to the monk, the pope looked up with a smile and said, “We’re no longer able to say, 'Silver and gold have I none.” The monk, looked down without a smile and said, “And we’re no longer able to say, ‘In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

Peter and John, the forerunners of the Christian Church, show up for Church, with no money.

This sets a standard.

Church is not about money. But it is about giving.

For God so loved, He gave.

Silver and gold have I none; but what I’ve got, I give.

What Peter has to give is no inferior second prize. He states this triumphantly. What I have, is way more awesome than money, and that, I give to you.

Like Jesus to the woman at the well. If you only knew the water that I have to give, you’d be asking Me, for a drink. John 4:10.

If you have Jesus, what you have to give is more valuable than all the silver, all the gold, in all the world.

All God’s gifts are meant to be regifted. And as we do, He gives more, we can never diminish His abundance supply. Mom always said, “You can’t outgive God.”

The more we try the more we experience the joy of the Lord and the better blessing of giving, than of receiving.

So, what is it that Peter has to give?

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

Peter doesn’t timidly ask a question.

“Excuse me, um, this might sound weird, but do you mind if I pray for you? I think maybe God might uh, you know, want to umm, help you, with your legs and stuff…”

No, he doesn’t ask for anything, he gives a command. In the name of, the authority of, Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!

Get up!

Jesus repeatedly told us He only said and did what He heard and saw from the Father.

Peter is doing the same. We can and should do that too.

This kind of boldness and confidence and faith doesn’t reside in man, but in God.

Faith without works is dead. James 2. So, Peter doesn’t stop with words…

7 And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength.

Not that it matters but the writer Luke was a doctor and the original text is medical jargon, doctor speak, for the feet and ankle and bones.

As Peter grabbed the man’s hand and pulled, God grabbed the man’s legs and healed, immediately.

8 So he, leaping up, stood and walked and entered the temple with them—walking, leaping, and praising God.

What began with the lame being lifted up, ended with him leaping up.

So, now it’s worth repeating; if you have Jesus, what you have to give is more valuable than all the silver, all the gold, in all the world.

If you don’t believe it, just ask that lame man leaping.

Okay, now, with that little detour done, they resume their trip to the temple, only with the addition of a smiling, joyful, human jumping bean.

9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God.

This is a picture of the purpose for signs, wonders, miracles, healings. Praising God.

To bring glory to God. It was then, and still is today.

God is the same, yesterday today and forever; Hebrews 13:8.

10 Then they knew that it was he who sat begging alms at the Beautiful Gate of the temple; and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

The goodness of God leads to repentance; Romans 2:4.

God’s goodness in this miracle leads to the repentance of thousands.

Acts 4:4; many believed and the number of the men grew to about 5,000.

11 Now as the lame man who was healed held on to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch which is called Solomon’s, greatly amazed.

Solomon’s porch, also on the east side of the temple, a large covered porch; a great shaded gathering place.

Word of the miracle spread and a crowd gathered quickly.

12 So when Peter saw it, he responded to the people: “Men of Israel, why do you marvel at this? Or why look so intently at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?

So, when Peter saw it, he might’ve thought, awesome another chance to preach!

But first he needs to set the record straight. He’s quick to say, don’t look at us, we didn’t do it. It wasn’t our goodness, good looks, godliness, or power.

This was done to set the stage to introduce the True Power and Godliness that works miracles among men.

This must always be done, so we don’t fall to the temptation of taking credit for what God has done.

Recently there was a movie in theatres called, Jesus Revolution. The film follows; Chuck Smith, (founder of Calvary Chapel that has grown to over 2,000 churches); teenage Greg Laurie (present day pastor); and Christian hippie Lonnie Frisbee, as they take part in the Jesus movement in California during the late 1960s.

Well, Chuck Smith, (went Home in 2013) had something like this miracle happen in one of his Church services (not in the movie). A couple of ladies, pushed a man in a wheelchair to the front for prayer. Well, when Chuck looked at the man, suddenly he knew, just knew, God would heal him. So, he told him, told him, not asked him, just told him, something like Peter, “In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up!” Then he took him by the hand and pulled him up, and the man was healed, completely healed!

The ladies who brought him, were beside themselves. Come to find out, they brought him up front to ask for prayer, for a cold.

God had other plans.

Well, the next night, there was another service, and guess what, word spread, a crowd gathered. And surprise, surprise, there were a couple guys in wheelchairs in the front row.

Chuck’s son, asked, “Dad, are you going to pull them out of the wheelchair too?”

Dad said something like Peter said. “No. God gave me a gift of faith last night. I could never do that, on my own power or godliness.”

With that said, remember what we learned about the Holy Spirit when we started Acts 2?

We looked at the gifts of the Holy Spirit in, 1 Corinthians 12:8-11, 28, Romans 12:6-8, and Ephesians 4:11.

We’re told that the gifts are given by the Holy Spirit individually as He wills.

God is the same, yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). All of His gifts are still in operation today. These gifts reside in God, not man. However, as per the very definition of a gift, they are given, as the Spirit wills.

Of His gifts, three apply to our text today: Faith, Healings, Miracles.

These three seem to go hand in hand in many ways. They often come in like a lion, attract a lot of attention; a sure-fire way to draw a crowd.

It’s easy to get addicted to the excitement.

However, we won’t do that, we won’t miss the real story, the real Power, behind the scenes, in the quiet time, the off season. Because we're told repeatedly that the gifts are given by the same Spirit, same Lord, same God, the obvious emphasis on the Giver, not the gift. 1 Cor. 12:8-11.

And, after that we’re told of, a more excellent way. The gifts are pointless, useless, without this more excellent way… the Way of Love. 1 Cor. 12:31.

The miraculous draws crowds to preach and see explosive growth; but the staying Power is gentle, and quiet… God’s abiding, unending, never failing, Love. 1 Cor. 13.

God is love. 1 John 4:8,16.

Let’s be busy about our Father’s business of Love, and leave the gift giving up to Him.

Let’s pray.

Father, thank You for Your exceedingly great and precious promises. For the greatest Gift of all, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

We are in awe of Your miracles, and signs, and wonders, and welcome each and every one, for Your goodness, leads to repentance. However, we don’t seek them, we seek You; we keep our eyes, and hearts, focused on You.

Help us remain faithful, in season, and out, ever preaching, with our lives, Your great Love.

We love You, forever.

Amen.

A Bride for Isaac, Genesis 24

Genesis 24:1. Now Abraham was old, well advanced in age; and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

Sarah died when Abraham was 137, and he’s 140 when Isaac marries. So, Abraham is somewhere between there, probably closer to 140 years old.

2 So Abraham said to the oldest servant of his house, who ruled over all that he had

This servant is the leading character through this chapter, yet, his name is never given. Many believe he is Eliezer, the one Abraham thought would be his heir, since, at that time, Abe was childless. Genesis 15:2.

COVENANT

“Please, put your hand under my thigh, 3 and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth…

In America when saying the pledge, you place your hand over your heart.

In court, when being sworn in to tell the truth, the whole truth, you place your hand over the Bible; God’s covenant.

In the Bible, back in that day, there was a peculiar way of taking an oath. It was placing your hand under the thigh, (some say loins) near, or on, the sign of the covenant. The sign of the covenant, was circumcision. Genesis 17:11.

We see it here, and again in Genesis 47:29, when Jacob has Joseph swear to not bury him in Egypt, but in the place, Abraham purchased as a burial place, in Hebron. (Today this is the Tomb of the Patriarchs).

Both times the oath giver was basically saying, “I’m putting my trust in you; my future is in your hands.”

COMMISSION

3that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell; 4 but you shall go to my country and to my family, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

My oh my oh my… Notice how many times Abraham uses the word “my”.

God is starting a nation from one man, Abraham, and thus, must stay within bloodlines.

Spiritually speaking:

Galatians 3:29; If you are Christ’s then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18; Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers… “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you.” 18 “I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

COOPERATE

5 And the servant said to him, “Perhaps the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land.

This makes it clear that Abraham did not mean "take" forcibly, but cordially cooperate and extend the invitation, for the bride to accept willingly and follow.

As it is with Christ, and His followers.

NO COMPROMISE

Read: Genesis 24:5-8

Twice he says do not take my son back there.

In chapter 26, famine hits and God tells Isaac, don’t go to Egypt. Don’t leave the Promise Land. So, Isaac stays, sows, reaps a hundred-fold.

Isaac, although tempted, never compromised by stepping foot outside the Promise Land into Egypt, or to the land of his kin.

Jesus, although tempted, never compromised by stepping foot outside God’s Promised plan and into the land of sin.

Romans 13:14; But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision (no compromise) for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

COMMENCE

Read: Genesis 24:9-11.

Eliezer (the servant) commences immediately, obeys right away without delay.

This was no small task. The way the crow flies the journey was 450-500 miles. The normal route by waterways, was 900-1,000 miles.

Ecclesiastes 5:4, When you make a vow to the Lord, do not delay to fulfill it; for He takes no pleasure in fools.

However, Jesus tells us a better way. Don’t make vows at all; just let your yes be yes, your no be no—whatever is more than that is from the evil one. Matthew 5:37.

CONSCIENTIOUS (Honorable. Just. Moral integrity. Character).

Read: Genesis 24:12-14.

Eliezer seeks God’s Guidance.

Prayer is not moving God’s hand to our will, but our heart, to His.

He didn’t ask for outward beauty, but inward.

Prayer is getting close enough to hear His heart. Then, repeating what you’re hearing.

He prays with Godly Wisdom.

The servant, Eliezer, prays for the future bride of his master’s son, to be determined by how…

Pretty? Nope. Smart? Nope. Good she cooks? Nope….

How she treats his camels. Yep.

Anyone offering to water a stranger’s ten thirsty camels is ignorant… or, they have the depth of moral integrity, character, worthy of a princess, a bride for his master’s son.

Because a thirsty camel can chug-a-lug 20 gallons. That’s 200 gallons for ten!

NO COINCIDENCE

Read: Genesis 24:15-20.

He asks for a drink. She gives one. No big deal. But all the while he’s drinking, he’s thinking, what about the camels, what about the camels???...

And then, verse 19, when she had finished giving him a drink, she says, what about the camels?

When the temporal and eternal meet, the world calls it coincidence, but we call it Providence.

Don’t miss this: Walking with God, listing to God, opens a whole new realm of opportunity, communication and connection.

A girl offering to water the camels would be nothing more than a nice, maybe naive, girl.

However, that Divinely Inspired prayer changed everything. It turned the ordinary into extraordinary.

You can do that too.

Psalm 37:4; delight yourself in the Lord and He gives you the desires of your heart.

CONFIRMATION

Read: Genesis 24:21-27.

He waited for confirmation to see if she was for real, or was she just ignorant? Did she speak first, think later? Many say they’ll do something—few follow through. Fewer finish. Trust but verify.

This was no small task.

10 camels, 20 gallons each, 200 gallons total. The pitcher she carried was only about 2 gallons (perhaps 3). That could mean 100 trips back and forth from the well, until the camels stopped drinking.

She didn’t quit until, verse 22, the camels had finished drinking.

Jesus declares in Luke 9:62, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

When the camels were done drinking, that was confirmation enough for Eliezer, to pop open the jewelry box.

The rest is just formality. He already knows God showed him that she’s the one. Nevertheless, he has to ask, who’s your daddy? Do you have room for us to stay?

She confirms that her grandpa, is Abraham’s brother, Nahor, and her dad, Bethuel, is Abraham’s nephew, and so, she is Abraham’s great niece.

And, yes sir, we have lots of room for you and your thirsty friends.

Once again Eliezer bows down and worships the Lord.

COMPELLED

Read: Genesis 24:28-33.

Eliezer is laser focused on task at hand, undistracted by the chaos, unfazed by food, family, fanfare and flattery from Laban.

I will not eat until I have told my errand.

Jesus says in John 4:34: My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work.

Eliezer is like that, compelled to complete the work of his master.

COMMUNICATOR

Read: Genesis 24:34-49.

Eliezer communicates clearly his role. I am Abraham’s servant. He uses the word “master” over 20 times; only exalts his master, never himself. My food, is to do the will of my master.

He communicates the entire story for Rebekah’s family. Everything out in the open, up on the table, even the part (especially the part) about his prayer, and the answer, before he finished speaking.

Nothing is left for guessing the reason for his visit.

He concludes with a request for them to communicate their response, immediately. Now if you will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me. And if not, tell me, that I may turn to the right hand or to the left.

CONSECRATED (Set apart. Sanctified).

Read: Genesis 24:50-60.

Eliezer, set himself apart, kept himself consecrated, in constant communion with his Maker, his master’s Master.

Three times we see him pray; each time the intensity increases.

He prayed upon arrival; verses 12-15.

He bowed his head and worshipped, upon learning Rebekah was Abraham’s kin; verses 26-27.

He bowed himself to the earth when they agreed that it was God’s will for Rebekah to go; verse 52.

He stayed set apart, consecrated, not allowing himself to take a vacation celebration even though they insisted.

That’s the world’s decoy. Sure, go ahead marry God’s plan for your life—tomorrow. Yes, start doing Church—but not today, next Sunday.

No, he said, do not hinder me from completing what the Lord has prospered. I must be about my master’s business.

COMFORTER

Read: Genesis 24:61-67.

Eliezer, led the way to the son.
When they drew near, Isaac was doing what the servant did so often. Pray.

Eliezer told Rebekah who he was.

Verse 64 in the KJV says Rebekah lighted off the camel. Some picture her lighting up a camel (cigarette). Delete that picture.

Rebekah covers herself with a veil, in humility and modesty. Godly dignity.

Isaac sees her, loves her, brings her into his mother’s tent; she becomes his wife and Isaac is comforted.

Eliezer tells Isaac everything.

Eliezer means God is my help.

Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as the Helper, Comforter, Teacher, One who tells of things to come. He points and leads and tells of Jesus.

The fingerprint of God is thick throughout His Word, and His world.

Abraham the father, offered his son.

Isaac the son, carried the wood up Moriah (Calvary), and willingly offered himself.

Now, this unnamed, helper, consecrated communicator, comforter, friend, brings the bride to the son. The son, who seemed to go away after his “resurrection” and isn’t seen again until united with his bride.

Sound familiar?

One day soon, the Father, will tell the Son, go get your Bride, and the Helper, the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, will catch His Bride up to be with Him, not in His mother’s tent—but in His Father’s house, forever, and ever, amen.

Let’s pray.

Lord, we ask You to compel us to be continuously consecrated to You. Like Rebekah, we say, yes, to You. Now Lord, please use us, to seek and find and lead Home, Your Bride.

We love You, forever.

Amen.

They Ate With Gladness, Acts 2:37-47

As prophesied.

Jesus came as a Babe, lived perfect, died sinless, rose victorious on the 3rd day.

For 40 days He gave infallible proof of His resurrection to hundreds of eye witnesses.

Then, He ascended into heaven, right before their very eyes.

10 days later, He descended, in Holy Spirit, with the sound of a rushing, mighty wind, and tongues of fire.

This drew a large crowd of folks that were in Jerusalem, from every nation under heaven, to celebrate the Feast of Weeks, also called, Pentecost.

They were confused, and amazed, and awestruck as they heard the wonderous works of God spoken in their native tongue from 120 redneck country bumpkin Galileans.

However, some didn’t hear the wonderous words, but other tongues; so, they scoffed and said the tongue talkers are just drunkards.

Peter, stood, raised his voice, said, “These are not drunk as you suppose, but this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel…” and this fisherman known for sticking his foot in his mouth, waxed eloquent and proceeded to articulate with boldness and clarity and wisdom exactly what was happening, by pointing to Old Testament passages from Joel 2 and king David, Psalms 16 and Psalm 110.

He said things like:

And it shall come to pass in the last days says God, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh… I will show wonders in the heaven above, and signs in the earth below (Acts 2:17, 19) …  and whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved (Acts 2:21) …

Peter concluded, saying: God has made this Jesus who you crucified, both Lord and Christ (Acts 2:36).

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

They heard Peter’s words.

They heard Peter quote Scripture from Joel and David.

Most of all they heard from God.

His Words are the Words that cut to the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Some heard God and were cut to the heart, “What should we do?”

Others heard other tongues and cut with their mouths; “These are drunk.”

Some hearts were softened; others were hardened.

It is the preacher’s job, to prayerfully, properly, prepare, and rightly divide and deliver, the Word of God; but up to the people to prepare their hearts to receive, to have an appetite, to hear.

It’s the shepherd’s responsibility to bring the food, but it’s up to the sheep to eat.

The waiter sets the food on the table…but he won’t feed the patron.

A cowboy can lead a horse to water, but...

Perhaps this is why throughout the gospels we hear Jesus often repeat the words, “Whoever has ears, let them hear…”  and then He says to every Church in every letter, in Revelation, “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the Churches”

The words, “I’m just not being fed” might say more about the person than the preacher.

So those with ears to hear, heard what the Holy Spirit was saying through Peter, and they were cut to the heart and asked, “What shall we do?”

Nothin’, just believe, and you’re good to go. Faith alone, in Christ alone, that’s all. Nothin’ more. John 3:16, for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

The thief on the cross couldn’t do anything, but believe, and Jesus said, he would be with Him, that very day, in paradise.

Wait.

What?

Peter didn’t say that.

Why not? Isn’t that what he’s supposed to say? Just believe, by faith, it’s all grace?

Well, yeah, lots of folks say that; just believe and you’re good to go…  But James says that the devil also believes, and trembles. James 2:19.

The whole council of the Word of God must be considered.

Sound doctrine can NOT be built on snippets of Scripture.

So, what exactly did Peter say?

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1. Repent. 2. Be baptized. 3. Receive Holy Spirit.

Uh oh, did the pendulum just swing to the other side?

Did Pete just add works to God’s free Gift?

So, some say to be saved you must believe… and be baptized… some add, it must be, in Jesus’ name... others add you must be filled with the Holy Spirit… and then some go further and say, with the evidence of speaking in tongues.

The list of dos and don’ts grows and grows.

Man likes to do that. One extreme or the other. They did it in Jesus’ day. Sadducees and Pharisees. Liberalistic and Legalistic. Anything goes, or nothing goes.

Okay, how do we untangle this?

Let’s start with the obvious. Whatever Jesus says is True.

John 3:16 is True.  “…whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.”

But we must understand what He means. The words, “believe in” mean more than intellectual agreement.

Believe in, is an intentional, intense, intimate, trust, a completely committed faith in.

The Word “in” depicts the act of going from out to in; like crossing the threshold into a building, completely committing yourself inside the building. Like totally immersing, body, soul and spirit, into the waters of baptism.

Perhaps it helps to say it like this: Whosoever be in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

John 17:20-21
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me
.

Before Jesus told Nick at night, John 3:16, He told him, John 3:3; unless one is born again, he can’t see the kingdom of God.

Life, begins at conception physically and spiritually.

Even if you’re at the end of your earthly life, like the thief on the cross.

The eternal destiny of the thief on the cross changed the moment he, willingly chose to conceive in his heart that the Man on the cross next to him was Lord of all. Jesus told him so by saying, “Today you’ll be with Me, in paradise.” Period. No hoops to jump. Aisles to walk. Churches to join. Prayers to say. He didn’t need to get baptized, or speak in tongues.

So then, why does Peter tell them to do these things? Repent. Be baptized. Receive Holy Spirit?

Because there’s so much more to Christianity than conception and death bed confessions.

Remember, the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible, and context is king.

So, let’s look at the context of the question Peter is answering. Verse 37 again.

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

They heard Peter

They heard Scripture

Most of all they heard the Holy Spirit speaking words that cut to the heart.

Lord, we pray we hear, like that. Open our ears to hear, our eyes to see, our hearts to know, You.

Look closely at their question. They did NOT ask “What must we do?” They asked, “What shall; what should, we do?”

Matthew 3:15; Jesus was baptized by John. Not because it was a must, but because it was a should. He said, “Let it be so, for it is fitting, for us to fulfill all righteousness”.

Doing what’s right, just because it’s right, especially when no one but God is looking, is exhilarating, liberating, Life giving.

In Acts 16:30-31, the Philippian jailer asks, “What must I do to be saved? Paul and Silas say, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

However here, in our text today, at the birth of the Church, it’s different.

The atmosphere is saturated with the Presence of the Holy Spirit.

They heard the Holy Spirit as a rushing mighty wind, perhaps even saw the tongues of fire.

They soaked in the sounds of the wonderous works of God spoken in their own language by folks who were speaking as the Spirit gave them utterance.

They listened as Peter, by Wisdom of the Holy Spirit, unveiled prophecy being fulfilled in their presence. Perhaps their eyes and hearts were overwhelmed and leaking as the Holy Spirit cut their hearts.

They heard the Word, and thus conceived, Life giving faith.

Romans 10:17
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ

That kind of faith gives birth to action.

James 2:17,20,26
Faith without works is dead

37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

So those with ears to hear, what the Spirit was saying to the Church, couldn’t help but act, they just had to ask:

What shall we do?

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Repent.

That was the same message John the Baptist preached. Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. He had one sermon, with one title and one message: Repent. Matthew 3:2.

After Jesus was baptized by John, He was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to fast and pray, 40 days and 40 nights. He was tempted by the devil and defeated him, the same way we must, by wielding the Word of God.

Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit, and began to preach saying “Repent.”

Repent means to turn around, to change one's mind or purpose, change the inner man regarding acceptance of the will of God.

Now Peter, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit, says what John and Jesus said; Repent.

The whole world shouted during COVID. “Wash your hands!” That’s Bible speak for REPENT. James 4:8: “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”

What the devil meant for harm; God used to preach to the world, “Repent!” Wash your hands of sin, wake up, the days are evil, the time is short.

Baptized.

Let everyone of you, (because it’s the right thing to do), be baptized in the name (authority) of Jesus Christ.

Holy Spirit.

Original text doesn’t say “and you shall…” It simply says, Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit.

He is a free Gift, for the asking, and receiving. Jesus told us plainly:

Luke 11:13
If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

The Holy Spirit, is the Promise from the Father, available to you, your children, and all who are afar.

That’s speaking to their family, and ours, that are afar.

Those long lost loved ones we can’t reach.

The Holy Spirit can. He’s got their number.

Lord, we pray for our children, for all, near and afar, that You Lord our God will call.

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation.”

Many other words, are not recorded here, hopefully they were uploaded on the cloud, so we can catch a replay when we get Home.

They had a perverse generation too… not much has changed.

41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.

They gladly received.

That is the joy of the Holy Spirit.

Receiving His Word brings joy.

Joy attracts people.

Romans 14:17
The Kingdom of Heaven is not meat and drink
(not rules and regulations) but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost.

So, after this redneck fisherman’s first recorded sermon, 3,000 souls were saved that day.

How many souls have we led to Christ in our life?

How many do you want to?

Do you want to?

Lord, give us, Your heart’s desire, to seek and to save that which is lost. Luke 19:10.

42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Do a spiritual health check.

These four items reflect the health of our Spiritual Life:

Doctrine – Word of God

Fellowship – doing life together with other believers

The breaking of bread (Communion; Lord’s Supper)

Prayer – corporate and private (speaking and listening).

If these are healthy and balanced, so are you, and your relationship with Jesus.

43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.

Right hearts, right living, results in reverential respect and honor for the Lord and His people.

44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need.

Thousands converted, were visitors, and they stayed and stayed. For many converting to Christianity, meant being ostracized from family and business.

Imagine if our Church had 3,000 saved this Sunday; and they all decided to stay, to learn more, to begin a new life in Him. The needs would be enormous.

Now, to be clear. This is not in any way shape or form, communism, as some try to insist.

These willingly, shared the love of Jesus, to meet the needs of the people.

It was not forcibly taken, as in communism. No one said, “Give us what we want or we’ll burn down the system.” That was demonic.

This was the Love of God in action.

Jesus became more important than possessions. They longed for Spiritual food, more than natural food. Jesus was Lord, of time and possessions.

NOTE: This is a description, not a prescription.

Describes what they did, in that time, not a command for what we must do, in our time.

46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

One accord. We heard those words at the opening of this chapter now again at the end.

This is an answer to Jesus’ prayer in John 17. Father make them one, as we are one. John 17:21-23.

One accord was how they were in the upper room for 10 days prior to the coming of the Holy Spirit. Praying in one accord, was preparation for the outpouring that led to 3,000 souls saved in a day.

Do we want to see an outpouring of His Holy Spirit? Are we willing to walk in one accord?

They ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart.  (We got that part figured out pretty good.)

Not fancy, but joy filled, in harmony and happy

One accord not discord, speaking well of one another, taming tongue, not gossip or slander; biting the tongue, not back biting one another.

We must choose, tongues of fire by the Holy Spirit, birthing one accord and gladness of heart.

Or, we’ll default to tongues of Babel, causing division, sadness of heart and discord.

Lord, cause our tongues, our lips, our words, to be used for what they were made for…praising You.

47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.

Life the way God meant the Church to live.

Favor with all the people, walking in the joy of Lord.

Church is not perfect, but Good.

The Lord added daily those being saved.

The Lord added, not gimmicks, or smooth preaching, or fancy lights, or good eats and treats, but the Lord drawing them in.

Jesus builds His Church, with and in, the most unlikely.

Back then, He used folks considered to be redneck, country bumpkins.

Today, in our Church, the Lord is adding, one by one, those who were lost sheep… those who wandered… maybe not from Him, but sheep without a shepherd, no place to call home.

One by one, the Good Shepherd is bringing them in, calling them home, into our family. A motley crew of scattered sheep, and a simple clubhouse; but it’s family, it’s home, it the kind of Church that Jesus builds.

Welcome home.

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, our best Friend, thank You for noticing us, and calling us, and making room for us, at Your table. We accept Your invitation, to come Home.

We love You, forever.

Amen.
