The Creation of Nations, Genesis 10

Genesis 10 is called, The Table of Nations.

Today there are about 6,800 languages and 193 nations.

How’d that happen?

In the beginning, didn’t we all come from one? Acts 17:26 tells us that from one blood, God made all nations.

And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their pre-appointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.  Acts 17:26

From one, God made many nations, determined their times, their boundaries and their dwellings.

Nations are made up of people.

This is not just about a bunch of hard to say names and places.

You were born for such a time as this. God has for you, a pre-appointed time and boundary and dwelling.

So, from one, God made many. That’s how His economy works.

Man’s economy is the opposite. Our dollar bill says: e pluribus unum; out of many, one

However, God’s currency reads more like: e unum pluribus; out of One, many. From One, comes all God’s children. John 3:16.

When God wants a harvest, He plants a Seed.

The Bible, like a lion, needs no defending. That’s why William F Albright, can say things like:

“The tenth chapter of Genesis… stands absolutely alone in ancient literature, without a remote parallel, even among the Greeks, where we find the closest approach to a distribution of peoples in genealogical framework… The Table of Nations remains an astonishing accurate document.”

(William Foxwell Albright was an American archaeologist, biblical scholar, philologist, (historical linguistics). He is considered one of the twentieth century's most influential American biblical scholars. He was instrumental in the authentication of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

In Genesis 9:25-27, Noah prophesied about his three boys. Genesis 10 is an outline fulfilling that prophecy.  John F. Walvoord says it like this:

The most important prophecy relating to the nations… reveals that the human race would be divided according to the natural divisions stemming from the three sons of Noah.

These prophecies, broad in scope and extensive in fulfillment, provide the framework for the history of the nations and a prophetic picture of the nations in the end of the age.

John F. Walvoord, long-time president of Dallas Theological Seminary, was one of the most prominent evangelical scholars of his generation. He is considered perhaps the world's foremost interpreter of Biblical prophecy.

10:1 Now this is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. And sons were born to them after the flood.

By the words, “this is the genealogy of” we know we’re starting a new scroll. This is the 5th Scroll of the 11 scrolls that made up the original format of Genesis.

They were faithful to be fruitful and multiply; and by these came all the nations of the world.

The Israelites, and Christ came from the line of Shem. You’ve heard of the word antisemite; it comes from Shem. Shemite; semite; antisemite.

Every lineage today traces back to one of these three brothers.

Japheth was the oldest (Genesis 10:21), and Ham was the youngest (Genesis 9:24).

After the flood the boys migrated to different parts of the globe. Their migrations, generally looked like this:

Japheth headed north (Ukraine, Russia, Europe).

Shem, the middle son, settled in the middle east, Israel.

Ham went south (Africa, Egypt). However, for a time some of Ham’s descendants were in the land of Canaan. They were the –ites Joshua expelled upon entering the Promise Land. (Cursed Canaanites).

From these we’ll see the birth of 70 nations.

The sons of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and TirasThe sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. The sons of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

Japheth, means, enlarge. And enlarge they did. But not at first.

Historically, they were a violent people. Their atrocities were many during those, dark ages.

But Light from the God of Shem reached them, and changed them, resulting in God blessing them and enlarging them, just as Noah had prophesied.

They grew from the shores of Europe to purple mountain majesties above the fruited plains, from sea to shining sea… and here we are, America the beautiful.

However, unfortunately, not all received the Light of the God of Shem.

Some choose to stay in darkness. Some fight against the Light.

Soon, there will be a war against Israel. It’s detailed in Ezekiel 38-39. Russia (Magog) will lead the pack, other nations (mostly from Japheth) will join.

Notice Tirus (my long-lost brother).

Ethnologists have established that the American Indian is closely related to groups of Asiatic peoples in eastern Asia, who descended from Japheth.

Derivations of the name, "Tiras" are found among American Indian tribes: Tauri, Taras, Turas… (The American Race by Daniel G. Brinton).

Additionally, certain American Indian tribes are related linguistically to northeast Asia.

Historic records indicate that the people of Tiras went off the grid; they seemed to disappear from the sphere of civilization.

Finally, when explorers spotted the American Indian, they thought they had discovered a "new man." However, they may have simply found Noah's grandson, Tiras, and family.

Why did I call Tirus, my long-lost brother?

The night before presenting this Sunday morning message, I just happened to learn that in 1638, John Bass married Elizabeth; the daughter of the Chief of the Nansemond Indian Nation.

John Bass, is our ancestor (more about this later).

5 From these the coastland peoples of the Gentiles were separated into their lands, everyone according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.

Notice they were separated “into

Not out of.

Into their  God doesn’t call you out, set you apart, so you do without, He doesn’t want you to feel like you’re on the outside looking in.

You’re not set apart to be apart but to be a part of something above and beyond all you could ever ask or think.

Your land. Your language. Your family. Your nation.

This message is repeated three times in this chapter. If God says something once, it’s important. Twice, sit up and take notice. Three times; stand up, draw close, take notes, it’s vitally important.

The names and places change, but the message remains.

You were born for such a time as this. God has for you, a pre-appointed time and boundary and dwelling.

Lord, in You we live and move and have our being, therein we are content. We don’t need the biggest, brightest, best, a new location, or occupation. In You, we’re Home, satisfied, and blessed.

The sons of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan.

Sheba and Dedan represent Saudi Arabia.

Havilah, means sand land; it’s where gold was found. It too is part of Saudi Arabia. In the Magog war of Ezekiel 38, 39, Havilah will protest against the war.

Today you can see in the news that Saudi Arabia and Israel are negotiating to normalize relations.

Friends, pay attention to the times and signs. The stage is set, for the coming Magog war of Ezekiel 38-39.

Russia is rattling swords toward Israel.

The timing of this war coincides with the rapture of the Church and the start of the seven-year Tribulation.

8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (that is the principal city).

Some Hebrew experts translate verses 8-9 as follows:

“Cush begat Nimrod; he began to be a tyrant in the Earth. He was a tyrannical hunter in opposition to the Lord. Thus it is said, ‘Nimrod the tyrannical opponent of YHWH.‘”

You see, Nimrod, means, rebel.

In the original text, “before the Lord” implies, in God’s face. Like an angry, or arrogant person, gets in your face.

Notice, Babel and Assyria; two places of Nimrod’s kingdom. They are the two places that will attack and take captive the nation of Israel in later years (722; 605 and 586 B.C.).

People may die, but the demonic activity that drove them, continues.

Babel, in the Babylonian language meant:  gateway to God. Reflecting Nimrod’s arrogant point of view.

However, in Hebrew, Babel means, confusion. Reflecting God's point of view regarding their prideful, one world, globalist, agenda. (We'll see how God handles it in the next chapter).

13 Mizraim begot Ludim, Anamim, Lehabim, Naphtuhim, 14 Pathrusim, and Casluhim (from whom came the Philistines and Caphtorim).

15 Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn, and Heth; 16 the Jebusite, the Amorite, and the Girgashite; 17 the Hivite, the Arkite, and the Sinite; 18 the Arvadite, the Zemarite, and the Hamathite. Afterward the families of the Canaanites were dispersed. 19 And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; then as you go toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha.

Some Canaanites settled in the Promise Land and Joshua (descendant of Shem) would remove them… mostly.

The Gibeonites tricked them and ended up becoming their servants. Fulfilling, in part, Noah’s prophecy.

20 These were the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands and in their nations.

There it is again…

Their… families, languages, lands, nations.

You were born for such a time as this. God has for you, a pre-appointed time and boundary and dwelling.

21 And children were born also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder. 22 The sons of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. 24 Arphaxad begot Salah, and Salah begot Eber. 25 To Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan begot Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, 27 Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, 28 Obal, Abimael, Sheba, 29 Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan. 30 And their dwelling place was from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the mountain of the east.

Now the spotlight swings to Shem and will, for the most part, follow his lineage for the rest of the Bible; for it leads to the Reason the Bible was written.

JESUS.

That’s it. The 70 nations from the sons of Noah; from them, stem, all the nations of the world.

You might’ve thought this list was boing—because your name’s not in it. But Jesus mentions another list, in another chapter 10, with another group of 70. You won’t find that list boring at all. And you want to make sure your name is on it.

Luke 10:1-20, Jesus sends out 70. They return all excited that they were able to preach the Gospel with power and authority, to heal the sick and cast out demons. Jesus puts it in perspective by telling them not to rejoice about being able to cast out demons, but rather rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

You see, this list mentioned in the first book of the Bible is nothing compared to another list mentioned in the last book, the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Above all else, we must make sure your name is on that list.

By the way, did I tell you that my long-lost brother, John Bass, is on that list?

Little Johnny Bass was only six years old.

Pocahontas’s father had been killed. Several Indian nations planned an uprising. There was an attack. Little Johnny fled deep into the woods.

The Nansemond Indians found him, took him in, cared for him, and they, the Indians, taught little Johnny about—the God of Shem, the Son of God, Jesus.

Little Johnny boy grew into the man, John Bass, the minister, who married the Chief’s daughter.

Around 1850, on land owned by the Bass family, the Indian Methodist Church was established for the Nansemond Indian Nation, in Norfolk County, VA

It was no small task, but they held fast to their family, their language, their land, their nation.

Being good stewards of what God had given, He enlarged their tents. About forty years later, on the same land, they established a public Indian school for Nansemond Indian Nation.

31 These were the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, in their lands, according to their nations.

32 These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.

There it is again…

Their… families, languages, lands, nations.

Your family, your language, your land, your nation.

Take ownership.

No more sitting on the outside looking in. Take ownership, and stewardship, with gratitude, of all God has given, you.

The names and places change, but the message remains.

You were born for such a time as this. God has for you, a pre-appointed time and boundary and dwelling.

Let’s pray.

Lord Jesus, thank You for opening our eyes and our hearts to see and receive our family, our language, our land, our nation, that You have given.

Help us steward what You’ve given, with gratitude; and submission to Your Divine design and plan for our lives.

We look forward with joy to the rest of our life, with You, here, and always.

We love You, forever.

Amen.
