Sodom and Gomorrah, Rescue Mission, Genesis 19:1-11

If you’re riding a tour bus east of Jerusalem, near the Dead Sea, and all you see is desolation, your tour guide is probably talking about Sodom and Gomorrah and Genesis 19; the day the LORD rained down fire and brimstone, leaving, to this day, the desolation you see.

Then, the bus may ease by a brown sign that reads: “Lot’s Wife” and the tour guide will quote Genesis 19:26.

One thing they won’t talk about is what we’re going to talk about today; what triggered the firestorm.

Genesis 19:1
Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

The two angels, are the two men, that were with the LORD in Genesis 18:2.

Lot sitting in the gate of Sodom, indicates he is now a judge in Sodom.

At the city gate is where city officials, judges, were seated. Like an open court for handling issues, settling disputes, etc. They were also gatekeepers, to screen who they let in to the city.

He’s officially integrated into this wicked city.

You drift toward what you stare at.

Lot pitched his tent toward Sodom; Genesis 13:10-13.

Lot dwelt in Sodom; Genesis 14:12.

Lot is an officer of Sodom; Genesis 19:1.

You drift toward what you stare at.

Genesis 3:6; Eve looked at the fruit, lusted for the fruit, she took the forbidden fruit.

2 Samuel 11:4; David looked at Bathsheba, lusted for Bathsheba, took forbidden Bathsheba; the wife of his loyal soldier, Uriah.

James 1:14; we look at, what we lust after, and are lured away and enticed. Lust conceived gives birth to sin, and sin death.

Okay back to our text.

Notice, Lot rose to meet them; whereas, Abraham, ran to meet them in Genesis 18:2.

The original text seems to indicate Lot simply gave a courtesy head nod; (the word “ground” is not in the original text).

However, Abraham ran to them and actually bowed himself to the ground; Genesis 18:2.

2 And he said, “Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant’s house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.”

Here now, my lords, Lot greets them using the same respectful word Abraham used, lord; adon, meaning lord, master; like respectfully calling someone, “Sir” today.

Lot offers them a place to stay for the night. This was a customary kindness offered to visitors back then. They didn’t have Holiday Inns and Motel 6.

Lot is unaware that these “men” are actually angels; thus, he’s offering to entertain angels, unawares. Hebrews 13:2.

2 …And they said, “No, but we will spend the night in the open square.”

They had accepted Abraham’s offer; but refused Lot’s…at first.

3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

Not nearly a nice a spread as Abe’s.

But how could they eat anyway? Abraham and Sarah just fed them the best, “tender and good” fatted calf, and bread from about five gallons of the finest flour, and butter and milk, all the fixin’s.

Angels must be able to eat. A LOT.

Feast: Hebrew: mishteh.

Definition: feast, drink.

Uses: banquet(s), drank, drink, drinking (do you see a pattern?), feasting, where they were drinking, which he drank.

Do you detect a theme? Hiccup.

It appears perhaps that drink was as important to Lot’s feast as the food. Whereas, with Abraham the focus was on the food, the finest of flour, the good and tender calf, milk and butter.

Tuck that thought away for another study, later in this chapter.

4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.

Both young and old, all…

All the men, and boys, young and old, all of them, from all over the city, surrounded the house.

Young, means, boy, lad, youth, child.

It’s dark outside. Grandads, dads, and lads, little boys, surround the house.

5 And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.”

So, why’d the males, young and old, surround this house?

To meet the men, who are actually angels? To get to know them, in the flesh, (carnally)?

That’s what some folks claim. They say this verse simply means they asked Lot to extend the common courtesy of allowing them to get acquainted with his guests.

Well, the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible; so, let’s let the Bible speak for itself.

Genesis 4:1; Adam knew Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain.

Gen. 4:17; Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to Enoch.

Gen. 4:25; Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son, and named him Seth.

In a few verses Lot will say in Genesis 19:8; I have two daughters who have not known a man…

Luke 1:34; Mary asks the angel how she’d get pregnant since she has not known, a man.

Matthew 1:25; Joseph did not know her, until she brought forth her first born Son, and he called His name JESUS.

Clearly, these men, boys, youth, of Sodom, surrounded the house and called for Lot to send out the strangers so they could, have homosexual relations with them; male with male. Where we get the word sodomy.

Okay then, some will go even further and argue, there’s nothing wrong with it, as long as no one gets hurt. They say the Bible doesn’t actually call it a sin. After all, God made us this way (they say); so, we should enjoy and pursue the passions and pleasures He gave us.

Once again, the best commentary on the Bible is the Bible, so we’ll let the Bible interpret itself.

Starting with the next couple verses:

Genesis 19:6-7
So, Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him, 7 and said, “Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly!

Lot goes out to them and closes the door behind him; he’s not afraid of them.

He calls them brethren; he knows them.

He comes right out says that what they’re planning to do is, wicked.

Lot’s not the only one to say it; God does too.

Leviticus 18:22; You must not lie with a man as with a woman; that is an abomination.

Leviticus 20:13; If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination.

Romans 1:27; Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomitesnor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

Jude 1:7; just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, having indulged in sexual immorality and having gone after strange flesh, in like manner with them are set forth as an example, undergoing the penalty of eternal fire.

Jude is comparing the sexual immorality of Sodom to the sexual perversion of the preflood demons that went in to know, human women.

When preflood demons corrupted God’s Divine design between man and woman; God destroyed the earth with a flood.

When sodomites perverted God’s Divine design between man and woman, God destroyed them with such utter destruction that to this day the land still lies in ruin; even the Dead Sea, is dead; an example of the eternal death of the lake of fire that awaits them.

Okay, let’s get back to Lot.

8 See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof.”

During a phone conversation, a day or so before delivering this message my daughter, Kayla, said: “Dad, I feel safe with you. I know you’d never do anything to hurt me.”

It came out of the clear blue. Glad she said it. Wasn’t sure why she did. Until writing this. It caused me to stop and think about how Lot’s daughters felt hearing their dad say such a thing.

Lot wasn’t going to win any dad of the year awards.

Maybe that was the cultural norm. Perhaps it was politically correct for guests to be guarded with your life, and females weren’t so high on the value scale.

BUT JUST BECAUSE CULTURE CALLS IT COOL; JUST BECAUSE IT’S POLITICALLY CORRECT, DOESN’T MAKE IT CORRECT.

How could a dad do such an awful thing?

But wait.

We do it too.

Only, according to our culturally cool, politically correct, stupid, standards.

I have sons and daughters, please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish…

Dear school do with them as you wish, sedate them with medications; seduce them with drag queens, coach them to change genders.

Dear internet, do with them as you wish, numb their minds with nonsense, cloud their judgement with chaos, indoctrinate them with your evil agenda.

Dear television; do with them as you wish, pervert their view of family, and fathers and faith.

Dear government, here are my children, raise them as you wish, pay them to be lazy, teach them left is right, and right is wrong, and that you are god.

Dear God, help us fear You and no man; to never cave to cultural norms or political correctness. Cause us to be courageous, bold as lions, standing unwavering speaking Your Truth, in Love. Forever, amen.

9 And they said, “Stand back!” Then they said, “This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them.” So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.

We will deal worse with you…

Compromise with sin only makes things worse.

Just ask the Levite’s wife in Judges 19-20.

The Levite and his wife (concubine) were traveling home but stopped for the night in Gibeah, a town that should’ve been safe. After all, it was their kinfolk, the Israelites, Benjamites.

Yet, only one old man, not from there, offered them lodging.

Then, while they were settling in, perverted men of the city surrounded the house and just like Sodom, they called for the visitor to be sent out to them, so they could know him.

Like Lot, the host told them not to do so wickedly, and offered them his own daughter, and the Levites concubine.

Like Sodom, they refused.

Instead of standing firm and trusting God the Levite sent his wife to them.

All night they abused and raped her until she lay dead on the doorstep.

The Levite took her home, cut her into twelve pieces which were sent to the twelve tribes of Israel.

Like today, in Gaza, Israel rose up united as one.

The LORD told them to attack Benjamin.

Before the dust settled, multiplied thousands on both sides, were dead.

Benjamin was nearly wiped out entirely.

10 But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. 11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

They were saved.

Lot was saved from the perversion pressing against him.

Lot’s daughters were saved from their dad’s cruel cultural correctness.

They were saved.

Not by compromise.

Not by appeasement.

But by intercession.

The day before, Abraham stood before the Lord, Genesis 18:22-23.

When all is said and done, we see that God remembered Abraham, and rescued Lot. Genesis 19:29.

Friend, sin wants to know you, to press hard against you until crushing you, dead at the doorstep.

God wants to rescue you, to pull you in, shut the door, and blind the enemy. Not only you, but all those He’s given you.

Let’s intercede.

Lord God Almighty, we invite You to invade our lives.

We welcome Your Good angels to intervene.

We intercede for all those You’ve given us, and ask You to snatch us from the claws of sin and pull us into Your house.

Where we will live and love You, forever.

Amen.
