The Walk

I've taken this walk with my kids, when they were young. And then, the same walk with my grandkids, as well.
We’d take a trail, less traveled by, one where they’d never been.
We’d go late in the day, when the shadows grew.
We’d walk and talk about different things. Important stuff, like, “Papa, how come butterflies are different colors?” …or, “how do frogs jump so high?”
I didn’t know the answer to most of their questions. But each time I’d ask some of my own; and without fail, I was simply amazed.
“Do you know where we’re at?”
They’d look around, shrug their little shoulders and shake their little head, “Nope.”
“No? Well, do you know how to get home from here?” I’d ask.
“Nope—” they’d say again and then, switch to a more important topic like,“—Look! A butterfly, come on Papa, let’s catch it…” Or perhaps, they’d kick a rock and ask if we could go fishing when we got back.
“It’s starting to get dark and you don’t know the way home. Aren’t you scared?”
They’d answer the same way, but this time they’d giggle. “Nope.”
“How come?” I’d ask.
“How come, what?”
“How come you’re not scared.”
They’d stop, look at me like I’d just asked the dumbest question in the world. “Cuz, you're with me—that’s why.”
It always goes the same. Every time I'm amazed anew.
Lord, help us to trust like a child; to know that we don't have to know, the way, or fear the growing shadows.‘Cuz You’re with us—that’s why.

It is possible to walk in faith, not fear. There is a place of perfect peace in the midst of whirling chaos.

Walk in faith, not fear . . . Perfect words at a perfect time.
